Art Curriculum Intent

At KS3 students begin a programme of study designed sequentially towards KS4.

We aim to develop over time during KS3 a number of areas:

  • To have a good understanding of the formal elements and their place in their own artwork.
  • To be able to creatively express ideas and experiences.
  • To be able to analyse and select appropriately the work of different artists and from different cultures and make connections to their own work.
  • To be able to experiment with a range of media, techniques and processes.
  • To be able to organise and develop ideas relevant to a given theme.
  • To be able to produce skilful final outcomes.

The curriculum is planned to develop the key skills, knowledge and techniques to make the necessary progress towards KS4, but also to acknowledge for students who do not opt for Art at GCSE, that they can carry forward skills such as effective high quality presentation, research, analysis and annotation skills and creative, independent thinking.

GCSE Photography Curriculum

This course is one that is not offered at KS3 and therefore begins in KS4. Students spend the beginning of the course learning the basics and use of the camera and its different functions. Through a series of ‘workshop’ style lessons, students are taught how to analyse and respond to the work of others.

Throughout the course students are given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, to include:

● developing and exploring ideas
● researching primary and contextual sources
● experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
● presenting personal response(s)

Year 10

Autumn half term 1

Induction period: embed knowledge, understanding and skills

  • Work produced during the induction period is not submitted for the final assessment of the Personal Portfolio
  • Students given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, to include:
    • exploring and experimenting with materials, processes, technologies, techniques and processes
    • recording practical and written observations
    • researching and investigating contextual sources
  • Students given the opportunity to generate and develop ideas by completing a small discrete project

Year 10

Autumn half term 2

Component 1: thematic response project: Abstraction

  • Work produced during this thematic response project could be* selected for submission for the final assessment of the Personal Portfolio. *Most students normally select to submit their second thematic response rather than their first as they have had more time to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills required.
  • This project is quite prescriptive compared to the later projects students will go on to produce. Students are normally given the names of photographers to research and we produce experimental projects together as a class to help to embed the skills required. Students who demonstrate a high level of skill at this early stage are encouraged to work more independently.
  • Students given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, to include:
    • developing and exploring ideas
    • researching primary and contextual sources
    • experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
    • presenting personal response(s)
Enrichment opportunity: Visit to Oxford as an extended opportunity for students to take photographs in different environments.

Year 10

Spring- Summer term

Component 1: thematic response project: Perfume Project

  • Work produced during this thematic response project is submitted for the final assessment of the Personal Portfolio
  • This project encourages students to take a more independent approach to their studies. Students must  select, develop and refine their own ideas.
  • Students given the opportunity to develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, to include:
    • developing and exploring ideas
    • researching primary and contextual sources
    • experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
    • presenting personal response(s) 5-hour period of sustained focus
Enrichment opportunity: Visit to Kew Gardens as an extended opportunity for students to take photographs in different environments.

Year 11

Autumn term

Component 1: mock exam assignment (including a period of sustained focus)

Past exam paper (students select theme)

  • Work produced during this project will be submitted for the final assessment of the Personal Portfolio
  • Students given the opportunity to mimic the content of the Externally Set Assignment, using a previous ESA theme or the Sample Assessment Materials (SAMs) available on the Edexcel website, to include:
    • developing and exploring ideas
    • researching primary and contextual sources
    • experimenting with media, materials, techniques and processes
    • presenting personal response(s) 10-hour period of sustained focus
  • Students given the opportunity to improve their mock exam assignment in light of feedback from teacher

Year 11

Spring term

Component 2: Externally Set Assignment
Title released in Jan by AQA

  • Preparatory period begins in January and students start work on their preparatory studies in response to the theme
  • Students complete all preparatory studies before the start of the period of sustained focus. This preparatory stage is no longer limited to 9 weeks and therefore students are given as much time as possible to complete this work.
  • The 10-hour period of sustained focus during which students produce their final response(s) to the theme

Year 11

Summer term

Component 1: Personal Portfolio projects (thematic response and mock exam assignment)

  • Students to finalise unfinished work in light of feedback from teacher and their own experience of completing the Externally Set Assignment
  • Students to select and present appropriate work for assessment of their Personal Portfolio (usually 1 of the 2 thematic response projects + mock exam project from Yr11)
  • External moderation window begins at the start of May.
