Curriculum Intent

At Challney High School For Girls we study languages to enhance our comprehension of the world around us.  Learning languages fosters curiosity and understanding of other cultures.  We aim to develop a love of language learning and a feeling of success in our learners, enabling them to communicate effectively. Our curriculum is developed around the three pillars of language learning (phonics, vocabulary and grammar) and enables learners to master key concepts and structures and confidently recall and adapt language for different purposes through a range of fun, engaging activities.

Unit 1: My world

Broken into 4 modules:  Introductions, names, nationalities, age, birthdays, where they live, types of houses, physical descriptions of others.


Unit 2: My family

Family members, physical description, names and ages, jobs and what parents do for a living (links to careers ed) places of work, personality description, pets and opinions.


Unit 3: My day

Describing your school, talking about your school day, sports and activities that you do after school and at weekends and where you do them (town)

Unit 1:Mon Quartier

Town, activities, asking for and giving directions, making arrangements to go out


Unit 2: ça c’est mon truc

Clothing and style, weather, talking about what you wear according to the activity/weather, past time activities and when/how often you do them, describing your weekend (time, routine), talking about music, giving preferences


Unit 3: Destination vacances

Usual holidays, preferred holidays, describing ideal holidays, describing a past holiday, festivals


Unit 4: Bouger c’est important

Sports and leisure, active holidays, parts of the body, sports injuries, describing others (sports personalities) and sporting events

Television, music, film, reading


Unit 2: Accro à la technologie

Old and new technology, using technology for leisure activities, risks of social networking sites, pros and cons of new technology, favourite technology and gadgets


Unit 3: Être ado, c’est quoi?

Relationships with parents, pocket money and helping at home, pressures of teenage life, life in the past, life of homeless children


Unit 4: En pleine forme

Healthy eating, healthy lifestyles, diet and health, resolutions to be healthier, life in the future

Clothes, fashion, shopping on the high street, visiting a shopping centre, problems when shopping, discussing hypothetical situations


Unit 4: Yo y mi mundo

Describing morning routines, afternoon and evening routines, relationships with family and friends, comparing routines, global issues and their solutions.

Exam Board: AQA

Paper 1: Listening Paper (25% of the final grade) - Listening and responding to spoken texts of different lengths and complexity.

Paper 2: Speaking (25% of the final grade)- Oral examination comprising of three tasks:  A role play, describing a picture and a general conversation

Paper 3: Reading paper (25% of the final grade) - Reading and responding to written texts of varying length and complexity, including literary texts. 

Paper 4: Writing paper (25% of the final grade) - A range of writing tasks and a translation task.
