Challney High School

Pastoral Care

At Challney High School for Girls, we have a very strong pastoral system.

Each Year Group has a Head of Year & Assistant Head of Year. The school is also divided into four house groups for events and competitions. The pastoral leaders are key members of staff who are, in general, the first point of contact for parents and carers. They lead a team of form tutors and are supported by a member of the Senior Leadership Team as well. We also have a Pastoral Support worker, who works with students 1:1 and in small groups to support well-being and self-confidence.

They are a dedicated team whose primary role revolves around the well-being and care of all of our students, focusing mainly on those within their respective years. They are closely involved with the school’s transition process, ensuring that all new students settle in well and in particular, those who transfer from their primary schools in September.

The pastoral leaders involve themselves in many aspects of school life, including supporting students with their personal development, effectively mentoring those in need and to actively support and encourage all of our students to realise their potential throughout their five years at CHSG.

Equity, diversity and inclusion are a top priority so students with protected characteristics are represented, given a voice and are valued.

Miss Ponsonby (Deputy Headteacher) and Mr Faruk (Assistant Headteacher) oversee the pastoral care and safeguarding of students in our school.

Enriching curriculums

All students access enriching extra-curricular activities inclusive of character education and digital character, which develops ‘influential women of the future’

Citizens and community

Students are active citizens of CHSG and the local Luton community. This is reflected in lessons, during free time and outside of school hours.

The Pastoral Teams

The role of the Head of Year and Assistant Head of Year is to oversee the pastoral well-being and academic progress of the year group. Our dedicated Year Heads and Assistant Heads of Year are all very experienced pastoral leads, with a passion for ensuring students at CHSG receive a well-rounded education. Heads of Year will also monitor and support the attendance, safeguarding and behaviour of their year group.

Pastoral Support Worker

Pastoral Support Worker (ID 2291)

My role as Pastoral support worker is to support the pastoral structures within the school and work alongside the year teams to advise and support students who may be experiencing difficulties such as high anxiety, low mood and low self-esteem.  I use a range of interventions including ELSA (emotional literacy support), lego therapy and sensory based activities as a therapeutic approach to tailor and personalise intervention for individual need.  Typically, I will work with students on a 1:1 basis for half a term giving them a comfortable and safe space to talk and empower them to find solutions to any difficulties.
