English as an Additional Language

We are a school where all languages are respected. Over 80% of our students have English as a second or additional language, some of whom will need additional support in order to access the curriculum so that they can develop English both socially and academically in order to achieve both to and beyond their potential.

iPads and bi-lingual dictionaries are loaned out when necessary. EAL teaching assistants provide in class support including translating and differentiating work. The Language Support Department also runs short term specific interventions to facilitate language development in reading, speaking, listening and mathematics.

All classroom teachers are familiar and updated with teaching strategies to support students for whom English is not a first language.

We see Pupil Support as the heart of the School. All staff want our students to feel valued and listened to so that they know they can come to us for help with any aspect of school life. The staff in Pupil Support are available every lunchtime for individual support with homework or any aspect of their studies.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact Mrs Kettley, Leader of Language Support.
